Those who advocate for change, reform, and advancement are more often than not doomed to get the short end of the stick. Too many people in the world are intolerant of change, making those who promote it a minority. Albert Einstein once proclaimed, "Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds," it's a shame that average ideals have succeeded in dwindling the efforts of those motivated to make a difference. Whether it be social activism, science, technology, or a mere challenge of common or orthodox beliefs, there will always be opponents ready to strike down any change-based ideology. Throughout history we see this in regards especially to religion, and civil rights. Those who found inconsistencies in the church were struck down, and those such as Charles Darwin with new ideas about the world are still ridiculed today. In this country alone it took African Americans almost two centuries before being fully integrated into white society, women as well struggled to create a distinctive place in society, and that battle has yet to be fully won. Technology has surged drastically, and though many take advantage of the advancements, far too many people see it as a threat. It takes a closed mind to see the world from such a limited window. Not accepting or promoting change- especially change for the better, in my eyes is a major personality flaw. Trapping ones self in a bubble may be comforting to some, but for others it may be the only thing holding them back from their full potential. Mediocre minded people need inspiration, ambition and a desire to to reach their limits, the only way for them to embrace change is by letting themselves soar and explore the areas of life that scare them.

Wonderful post! :)
ReplyDeleteI wholeheartedly agree with your claim that some people trap themselves inside their own comfort zone. Some people live their lives never even considering the option of change, whether it be for the betterment of themselves or not. Sometimes it's hard for people to look at general political opinions, social issues, and life choices through the perspectives of others. Your use of religious and social historical events was also a great addition to your piece, i really enjoyed it. Keep posting!!! :)
I love how you introduced your quote. Your claims on the world and changing its ways is captured beautifully. I like how you infused history with your quote and how it took Americans so long for some change. I also like how you discussed technology and the effect on people. You're absolutely right on how people are unwilling to change and I like how you give a bit of advice on how to break them down. Great post!
ReplyDeleteYou mention how Charles Darwin is till being ridiculed today, but by who? Any intelligent person can explain to you the wonders of natural selection that we would have not otherwise discovered without Mr. Darwin. So while there might be those who "ridicule" him there are many more who revere the man for his progress in the sciences. At the end though, I agree with you, those who are complacent about the current state of things hold back those who long for change.
ReplyDeleteWell true, he isn't ridiculed by many these days- not like he was in the past- I didnt make that very clear. but there are still those who fight for evolution to not be taught in schools, and fundamentalists who are very orthodox when it comes to ideas that contradict the bible. Evolution is still an issue for some, but not to the degree it used to be.
DeleteI love the way you introduced your quote, and the analysis of it. Great post! There will always be opponets in change and reform, but I like the way you give advice on putting them down (like Laura said). You did a good job in including actions Americans have done throughout history . Just overall, well done :)
